XLVIII_MPFW

Here we are with Part 2 of MPFW's Best of 2009 Awards! Today includes the pro wrestling and video game award portions. I'm going to keep it simple for pro wrestling awards this year and just do wrestler of the year and the top 5 live shows of the year. On the other side of that will be the top 5 Xbox Live Arcade games and top 5 Xbox 360 games. I don't want to keep you waiting since I know you can barely contain your excitement. Let's go!

Wrestler of the Year

No explanation needed. Woo Woo Woo! You Know It!

Top 5 Live Shows of the Year

One of my favorite things in life is to go to a wrestling show and get your mind off of reality. Here is my top 5 list of live shows for 2009. Remember, this is only a list of shows that I have seen this year.

5. CHIKARA "Revelation X"
CHIKARA's first show of the year, and it's a great start. A fun show throughout ending with two great main events - The Colony challenging The Osirian Portal for Los Campeonatos de Parejas, and Vin Gerard vs. Jimmy "Equinox" Olsen in a ladder match for the vacant Young Lions Cup.

4. CHIKARA "Three-Fisted Tales"
Another fun CHIKARA show. Really good stuff from top to bottom. Great match between Claudio Castagnoli and Eddie Kingston to end their feud, and a fantastic main event with The Osirian Portal challenging The Colony for the tag titles. The biggest event happened at the end when Die Bruderschaft is revealed, a storyline that has been brewing for a long time and finally, the big reveal.

3. Dragon Gate USA "Open the Historic Gate"
Finally my chance to see the Dragon Gate wrestlers in person and this didn't disappoint. All of the matches were great (minus one, you can figure that one out) and the CHIKARA guys tore down the house in their match. You need to see this show.

2. CHIKARA "Aniversario Yang"
Another absolutely fun show, and why wouldn't it be? Not a bad match in the bunch. The last 3 matches are just incredibly awesome that they need to be seen immediately. The main event of The Colony vs. FIST in masks vs. hair is just awesome and probably my favorite match of the year.

1. CHIKARA "King of Trios 2009"
Technically this was three seperate shows, but who cares? All together, this was the most epic pro wrestling weekend I ever experienced. The talent included the regulars of CHIKARA, Bryan Danielson, Johnny Saint, Austin Aries, Kota Ibushi and many others. Three of my favorite matches of the year for CHIKARA happened on this weekend including El Generico vs. Kota Ibushi vs. Nick Jackson vs. Jigsaw, an absolutely epic match-up between The Masters of 1000 Holds (Mike Quackenbush, Johnny Saint and Jorge Rivera) vs. Team Uppercut (Claudio Castagnoli, Bryan Danielson and Dave Taylor), and Team Uppercut vs. FIST in the tournament finals.

Other shows attended this year - CHIKARA's "Young Lions Cup VII Night 3"and "Cibernetico Increible", and JAPW Womens Division's "Female Revolution" and "Girl Power".

Top 5 Xbox Live Arcade Games of the Year

Now the list of the downloadable games for the Xbox 360, the Xbox Live Arcade games. A good year overall for this platform.

5. Peggle
This game is simple, yet just so darn fun. A really addicting game with plenty of levels and plenty of challenges to choose from.

4. 1 vs. 100
This might be up for debate whether or not this is considered an arcade game, but you do play it on Xbox Live, and there are achievements, so we'll just say it's an arcade game. It's the first trivia game to include a REAL host with REAL prizes and makes every experience with this game different. It is extremely addicting and best of all, it's free to play for gold subscribers!

3. Shadow Complex
I have to give this game credit for looking so great for an Xbox Live Arcade game. This game plays just like Super Metroid and still fun to play. Great for multiple playthroughs and a steal at $15.

2. 'Splosion Man
This game is just go darn good. A very fun game with a humorous style. This game provides a nice challenge gives a platforming experience like they should be - challenging and fun. Lots of levels to play with, a co-op mode and even a hardcore mode for those up for a bigger challenge. A great deal at $10 so please play this game.

1. Trials HD
This is the most addicting game I've played all year.
Everything about this game is just so good. It is one of those easy to learn, hard to master kind of games. It's fun to compete with your friends and go for fastest times. There are plenty of tracks and tournaments to try out and even an awesome custom track creator. Check this out if you haven't and it's well worth the $15.

Other arcade games I played that didn't make the top 5 - The Maw, R-Type Dimensions, Watchmen: The End is Nigh, The Dishwasher, OutRun Online Arcade, The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled

Top 5 Xbox 360 Games of the Year

Now my top 5 Xbox 360 console games of the year. Before I start, I DID NOT PLAY MODERN WARFARE 2, SO DON'T COMPLAIN THAT IT'S NOT ON MY LIST!

Honorable Mention - The Beatles: Rock Band
This game was originally in my top 5 until a late entry knocked it down. A lot of effort was put into this game to create the most authentic Beatles experience. Fun to play, but not that challenging for experienced music game players.

5. Guitar Hero: Metallica
One of the many Guitar Hero games released this year and this one was the best. Metallica's music is perfect for this type of game since it's challenging and very fun to play. Great setlist and it's great for each instrument.

4. WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2010
I was always a fan of the WWE games since they're always fun to play. This installment is still great to play and adds modes like create-a-storyline, and a community where you can share created wrestlers with the world. This is my favorite WWE game to date.

3. DJ Hero
An innovative music game with one of the coolest peripherals ever made, the turntable controller. Really fun to play and one of the best setlists ever put into a music game. So far I enjoyed every minute I have played with this game.

2. Batman: Arkham Asylum
I would have to agree with everyone else and say that this is the best superhero game ever made. Looks great and plays great. It was a fantastic experience playing this game, so check it out.

1. Left 4 Dead 2
I loved the first game, but this game added more weapons, more enemies, more game modes, melee weapons which makes the gameplay a whole lot better, Ellis, and a stronger narrative. The gameplay is much better than the first game and each scenario is a great experience especially my favorite, the Dead Center scenario. If you loved the first game, you need to play this. If you're looking for a great game, you need to play this.

Other Xbox 360 games that didn't make the cut - Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero: Van Halen, Borderlands

That wraps up the Best of 2009 Awards. Hope you enjoyed them. Remember to check out yesterday's awards if you haven't yet. Keep an eye on my Facebook to stay updated about my last project for MPFW, my Top 100 Video Games of All-Time. See you then!
