XLVII_MPFW

Welcome all to the first half of the MPFW Best of 2009 Awards. You may have noticed that this is a different set-up than last year with only two parts compared to three from last year. Today's awards include my miscellaneous awards, my top moments of the year, and my picks for the top 5 movies of the year. Tomorrow will include awards for pro wrestling and video games. No time to fool around in this one, so we'll get right to the good stuff!

My Miscellaneous Awards

Here's my little miscellaneous awards for the year. Not as much brown-nosing as last year.

-Album of the Year: "Endgame" by Megadeth
-Video Game Podcast of the Year: We Talk Games
-Best YouTube Fad of the Year: Keyboard Cat
-Invention of the Year: The Snuggie
-Catchphrase of the Year: "Woo Woo Woo!"
-Best New Food Joint (in my area) of the Year: Sonic
-Saddest Loss of the Year: Michael Jackson
-Most Annoying "Celebrities" of the Year: Jon and Kate Gosselin
-Saddest Video Game News of the Year: 3D Realms shuts down, killing all hope for Duke Nukem Forever...or did it?
-Sexiest Chick of the Year: Megan Fox (back-to-back winner for this award)

Top Moments of the Year

-I got my 4th car, a 94 Toyota Corolla. So far it's the best one I've had.

-I was selected for jury duty for this first time. It was a very interesting experience. The person ended up pleading guilty anyway, before I got to do the fun part and deliberate with my fellow jury members.

-My computer got knocked out for a while due to a virus. Remember kids, don't try looking for keygens online, get some friends with connections instead.

-Over the summer, I obtained 100% completion in Grand Theft Auto IV.

-I made a few podcasting appearances this year - A brief co-hosting stint on Smart Wrestling Fan reviewing an episode of SmackDown! (Episode 206), a memorable appearance for Tope Con Coolio, and my debut for We Talk Games Vol. 2 (Episode 7) reviewing The Beatles: Rock Band with Wiggly.

-MPFW ran the first and only Loteria Letal: Video Game Edition, a tag team tournament of randomly-selected video game characters. The tournament was eventually won by the team of Sub-Zero and Duke Nukem.

-My friends Ashley and James had
a Halloween party that I was fortunate enough to attend. I decided to go as my new favorite CHIKARA wrestler, Frightmare. At a later CHIKARA show, I was able to show Frightmare a picture of my costume and he loved it.

-I made an announcement that MPFW will be going into retirement. With all the time I spend working on school work or working at my job, a lot of my free time is gone. I did say that I will do one more project before I am done with this blog. In the near future, I will be counting down my top 100 vi
deo games of all-time. In my last blog I hinted that it will go along with the 20th anniversary of something that happened on February 12, 1990. That date was the North American release date of Super Mario Bros. 3, the very first video game I played. Keep an eye out on my Facebook for more details.

Top 5 Movies of the Year

Now I bring you my top 5 movies of 2009. We had a few good ones this year including one that is now one of my favorite movies of all-time. REMEMBER, THESE ONLY INCLUDE MOVIES I HAVE SEEN THIS YEAR!

Honorable Mention - Terminator Salvation
This was originally at Number 5 before the now Number 4 knocked it out of the top 5. I'm a fan of the Terminator series and I was very happy of how this film turned out after the abomination that was Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Some might not have liked it, but this was an enjoyable film for me.

5. Watchmen
Zack Snyder pulled off the near-impossible and made Watchmen into a film. There are indeed some changes made from the graphic novel, but I felt the were actually better in the film. A few actors stand out that made this movie great for me, like Rorschach and The Comedian. This film got some mixed reviews, but as a fan of the graphic novel, I give it two thumbs up.

4. Avatar
I had the chance to see this movie in 3D and it was just amazing. The story may have been a little weak, but everything else in the film makes up for it. Acting is good, the action sequences are fantastic and the CGI is just ridiculously, insanely awesome.

3. Star Trek
J.J. Abram's reboot of the Star Trek series stays true to its original works and gives it more appeal, and I considered this probably the best movie franchise reboot ever done. I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to more of them in the future.

2. Inglourious Basterds
A prime example of Quentin Tarantino's excellent storytelling. Great acting and a great story that re-writes World War II. Brad Pitt does an excellent job and this film also contains the best movie villain of the year.

1. District 9
For me, this was a perfect movie and it deserves my pick for Best Movie of 2009. Great original story and some great action, and it is very impressive despite the film's $30 million budget. Peter Jackson, I salute you.

Movies I saw this year that didn't make the cut: Friday the 13th, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Jennifer's Body.

That was fun. Tomorrow brings us the second half of the Best of 2009 awards featuring some pro wrestling and video game awards. See you on the other side!
